D-Day Discovered was started in 2025, the 80th year since the end of World War 2.
Nick and Mike are retired British Army officers, with over 40 years of service between them. Starting this new adventure, they are keen to use their experiance and knowledge to deliver unique battlefield tours to anyone that will listen!
Nick Gunnell joined the Army in 2004 as a Sapper and commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 2006. He has served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and various other locations including the Demilitarised Zone in Korea, Jordan, Cyprus, Romania, USA, Canada, and Brunei. His interest in military history was sparked during a six-month tour in the Falkland Islands, where he received a battlefield tour from three Falklands War veterans. Since then, Nick has led tours in the Falkland Islands, Normandy, and London.
With extensive experience in Battlegroup, Brigade, and Divisional HQs, he highlights the operational challenges of translating strategic thinking into tactical execution. Nick is currently pursuing a Master's in Terrorism, Security, and Society at King's College London.
Mike has served 20 years as an Army officer in the Royal Engineers, deploying several times to Afghanistan. his early career saw him within both a Bomb disposal and then armoured rolls before moving to a much more technical career, with experience in infrastructure, fuels and force protection engineering.
Mike is a Chartered Engineer with significant experience in physical security. This, combined with his knowledge in explosive ordnance, allows him to focus much more on the bunkers and fortifications found throughout Normandy.
